Just the Basics

Just the Basics

Well guys- we’ve almost made it through the winter, and spring is within our reach! For me, that means that I’m starting to pull my spring/summer clothes out of storage, and I’m dusting off my favorite warm-weather shoes. To kick off my spring content, I figured that there’s no better place to start than with the basics, baby! Lucky for me, Everlane sent me their complete basics kit to try out, so I’m going to break it down for you here!

BASIC #1- A Staple Tee

For me, one of the most crucial items in my spring/summer wardrobe is a reliable, semi-fitted T-shirt. Since I work from home, and therefore don’t have to adhere to any sort of office dress code, you can find me 80% of my workdays in a t-shirt and leggings or jeans. I love Everlane’s Cotton Box-Cut Tee for two reasons: the first being that it is seriously good quality for the it’s $18 price tag, and the second being that it’s the perfect length (long enough to tuck into your jeans, but not so long that you accidentally go full-Ariana-Grande.) When I find a t-shirt that I like, I usually buy multiple: white, black, a solid color, and a black/white or navy/white stripe for when I’m feeling particularly Parisienne.

BASIC #2- A Versatile Pair of Denim

When I say of a ‘versatile’ pair of jeans, I usually mean can it be worn day to night and can it transition from season to season? When I think day-to-night in terms of denim, I usually think (at the very least) a semi-fitted style (you would be hard-pressed to find me in boyfriend jeans while out at night). In terms of transitional denim, I’m usually talking about wash. When I find a good pair of jeans, I like to wear them year-round so I usually stay away from super light wash denim. My sweet spot is mid to dark wash, and I’ll wear those all year long. I really like the pair I chose from Everlane (which is the Authentic Stretch High-Rise Cigarette Jean in Mid Blue) because the cigarette cut tends to fit me the best, since I’m built like a ruler (straight, no curves, no butt, chicken legs- I’ve accepted it, and it works for me). The leg is perfect when worn with an ankle boot while it’s still colder out, or cuffed with a day-heel which is how I’ve styled it below.

BASIC #3- A Base for Layering

Living in NYC in the summer is like playing a guessing game with your body-temperature: it’s sweltering and humid outside, but the subways are freezing (unless the AC is broken, in which case it’s hotter than outside), and all of the restaurants & coffee shops have the AC’s blasting. That’s why l-a-y-e-r-i-n-g is the name of the game. I usually go for a tank top or bodysuit as my base layer, and Everlane’s ‘The Bodysuit’ is a perfect option. I love the low back (so cute as an option for a night out) and I also like that it just slides on like a 1pc swimsuit, instead of having the uncomfortable crotch button closure that most bodysuits have. Side note: I’m 5’9” and have a really long torso, so bodysuits from most brands tend to be really ill-fitting and I usually can’t even wear them. That is NOT the case for this Everlane bodysuit- the stretch is amazing, and it’s so comfortable for me, which is a serious win (I’m wearing a size SMALL.)

BASIC #4- A Daytime Shoe with Some Lift

As I just mentioned, I am 5’9” flat footed, but I still love to wear a heel as often as I can. I exclusively wear heels out at night, and almost always wear a shoe with at least 2” of lift during the day as well BUT since I do so much walking when I’m out & about for the entire day, I usually gravitate towards a wedge so I can get a little extra comfort. I think it ends up being a trade-off: I find a traditional heel to be SO much easier to walk in than a clunky wedge, but with a heel I tend to get more blisters and the pressure on the balls of my feet ends up being unbearable after about 4 hrs of walking around. Enter The Day Heel. You guys, I’m not exaggerating when I say that they are the most comfortable pair of heels I’ve ever worn. I am prone to blisters, and have semi-wide feet so a heel with any sort of tapered toe is usually game over for me- BUT NOT THE DAY HEEL! They are so comfortable and the 2” heel is the perfect height to avoid that terrible pressure on the balls of your feet when you’re wearing them for long periods of time. It has an elasticized back, which is definitely the reason that my heels aren’t currently covered in blisters, and the shape of the shoe is reminiscent of Annie getting dropped off at Camp Walden in The Parent Trap and since she was my style inspiration for ~8 years, I am all. about. it. I got the color ‘Pecan Stacked’ in their leather category (which just means that the block heel is in a contrasting color from the shoe leather), but I think I’m also going to get them in the full bright red leather because they’re so good.

Check out how I styled these pieces below, and let me know what you think!
